First light

The morning

A wedding dress hangs over a kitchen door beside a window, with two mugs of tea on the table
A bridesmaid in a dressing gown laughs with her head back at a kitchen table
A mother's hands fasten the zip at the back of a wedding dress
A small girl sits on a kitchen worktop eating toast while a dog waits below

A word from Holly

I'm in the kitchen by eight with a cup of tea, and for most of the morning nobody remembers I'm there. It has worked that way since 2014.

The vows

The ceremony

Guests laugh and wipe their eyes in a small stone room while the couple stand at the far end under a window
Two hands held tightly during the vows, a suit sleeve and a lace cuff
A bride and groom laugh as they look toward guests in a stone church, with an elderly woman clapping in the foreground.

Out on the sand

The wild bit

A wedding party runs down a sand dune in a gale, coats and dress blown sideways, a dog racing ahead
A wet collie with a ribbon on its collar runs across hard sand, ears blown inside out
A man and a woman run and laugh on a beach while holding their coats open to the wind.
A small boy in a suit runs along the tide line, his tie flying behind him
The wedding party walk back across a vast empty beach towards the dunes under a huge late-afternoon sky

If it's blowing, we go out anyway. The pictures are always better for it.

Candles lit

The evening

Three guests at a candlelit table cry with laughter during the speeches
A couple turn in their first dance, blurred under festoon lights, guests soft in the dark around them
A child in a dark suit sleeps sitting back in a wooden chair.

I stay until the dancing has properly started, then slip out the same way I came in.

What couples say

Couples write about their day afterwards, and about what it was like having me there from breakfast to the last dance. Ask and I'll send you every word.
